The First Step

I did something bold.  I quit my job, without another job already lined up.  Then I did something even bolder.  I announced to previous co-workers, friends, family and the universe that I was going to start a blog about how to make bold moves such as, “How to Quit a Job That is Making You Miserable.”

I was raised to live by my word.  In 8th grade, we were all asked what we were going to be when we grew up.  I firmly declared, “an author.”  I put it out to the universe and gave my word.  It’s printed in black and white in the 1984 JFK Middle School newspaper that is hidden somewhere in the piles of memorabilia and junk I’ve been purging in our basement.  It’s been weighing on my mind ever since.  Does starting a blog qualify one as an author?

While I’ve been enjoying my new-found freedom this last month, I’ve had numerous requests, “How do I find your blog?” “When are you launching your blog?” “I’m still waiting for your blog!!!”  Wow! You people know how to make someone feel wanted . . . and guilty.

I’ve also been taking some writing courses during this semi-retirement phase.  I’ve learned all about writer’s block, and how to overcome the voices in our heads telling us we’re just not good enough.  I’ve been intimidated by the sharing of other students’ work that in my mind is far superior to mine.  When I finally made the first move to set up a blog, I got stuck with the name, pictures, and creativity of the home page. I was more concerned with the aesthetics than the content I want to share.

I decided I need to live by my own advice that I’ve shared with my husband and all of his start-up endeavors, “If you have a good product, just launch it.  You can perfect it later.” I can’t make my readers wait.  So here goes my bold move of launching a blog about not being afraid to take a big first step because bold moves are the best moves.  Please ignore the aesthetics and stay tuned for all that has transpired since I made the first bold move of resigning.
